Remote Teams has Audio Issues

Has this happened to you? You are working from home and have to attend a video meeting or conference call, and when you join, you discover that not only can you not hear anyone, no one can hear you?! Lucky for you, dear reader, there is a solution to your problem, and it is free!

The source of the problem

The source of the problem most likely is when you use the Remote Desktop Connection application that allows you to connect to your work desktop here at the office. When you connect to the desktop here at the office you are basically taking control of the desktop the same way an RC car is controlled via Remote Controller.

The source of the problem

  1. Click on the "Show Options" at the bottom left

  2. After clicking that it will expand and show around five tabs, select the middle one “Local Resources

  3. Next, click the “Settings…” button in “Remote Audio”

  4. Make sure “Remote Audio Playback” is set to “Play on this computer” and “Remote Audio Recording” is set to play from this computer. (see image above)

  5. After that, under “Local Devices and Resources” click “More…”.

  6. Make sure that “Video Capture devices” is checked (see image below)

  7. Now you can connect to your desktop computer and the audio/camera devices should pass through

Congrats you completed part one of the process, here comes part two!

  1. Be sure Teams actually closed. To be sure, you can press Ctrl+Alt+Del and select Task Manager

  2. Look in the Processes section for Microsoft Teams, if it is there, right-click on it and select End Task

  3. Open Teams

  4. To change the camera within Teams, click on your Icon (your picture) at the top right and select settings.

  5. From the Settings dialog, select Devices

  6. In the Camera section, click the drop-down and select the camera on your laptop.

  7. In the Speaker, select Remote Audio or the appropriate speaker (typically your headset or whichever is available)

  8. In the Microphone, select Remote Audio or your headset (whichever is available)
